Recalls and technical service bulletins (TSBs) are both ways manufacturers address vehicle issues, but they're different in scope, urgency, and how they're handled.

## Recalls: safety-critical

A recall is issued when a manufacturer or regulator (like NHTSA) discovers a defect that poses a safety risk or violates emissions standards. Recalls are mandatory, free to fix, and backed by law. You'll be notified by mail, and dealerships must repair the issue at no cost, even if your warranty has expired. Examples: faulty airbags, braking problems, or fuel-system risks.

## TSBs: known issues, not safety-critical

A TSB is a technical bulletin issued when engineers discover a pattern-maybe a minor noise, a dashboard quirk, or premature wear that doesn't pose a safety threat. TSBs aren't mandatory, though dealerships may cover repair costs under warranty. They're usually listed in the service system so technicians know what to look for and how to fix it.

## What to do

Always address recalls immediately-they're safety-related and free. If you suspect a TSB applies to your car, ask your service advisor; they can look it up and advise.
